General Surgery at St. Clair Health

When facing health issues, there are various types of doctors and surgeons available for consultation. Many surgical procedures necessitate specialists who focus on specific areas of the body. For instance, a neurosurgeon specializes in surgeries involving the brain. In contrast, general surgeons do not limit themselves to a particular specialty or area of the body; instead, they are trained to perform a wide range of surgical procedures across different areas of medicine.

A general surgeon has extensive knowledge of the entire surgical process and has an understanding of all areas of surgery. This is exactly why Fernando Hayetian, MD, chose general surgery.

Who is Dr. Hayetian?

Dr. Hayetian is a surgeon who recently joined St. Clair Medical Group General Surgery. He started his medical training in his home country of Argentina and has since continued his surgical training at West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA, then subsequently developed his practice in Pennsylvania and Texas.

From a young age Dr. Hayetian always known he wanted to be a doctor, but it was not until he went to medical school and started exploring different specialties that he realized he wanted to be a surgeon. When he began his surgical rotations he quickly fell in love with the practical aspects of it. “With surgery you feel like you are actively helping the patient to get better. You utilize your hands to provide solutions to the problems that a patient is experiencing,” says Dr. Hayetian.

After deciding to pursue a career in surgery, he needed to determine his specific surgical specialty. “After I went through my surgery residency I couldn’t choose just one subspecialty. I wanted to do all of them,” he explained. General surgery ended up being the perfect fit for Dr. Hayetian. He has the opportunity to interact with a diverse patient population and perform a variety of surgical procedures on a daily basis.

Areas of Focus

At St. Clair Health, Dr. Hayetian mainly focuses on performing laparoscopic surgeries. When using this surgical technique, the surgeon will begin by making a small incision that is no longer than one centimeter. Narrow tubes and instruments are inserted into the body through the incision and manipulated by the surgeon to carry out the tasks necessary to complete the surgery. This technique is considered minimally invasive. The smaller incisions allow for Dr. Hayetian’s patients to experience shorter recovery times, less pain, less incisional site complications, and less scaring.

As technology continues to advance, there are more and more options available to surgeons. With the technology available at St. Clair Health, Dr. Hayetian is also performing robotic surgery, which is also a minimally invasive technique, variation from laparoscopic surgery, but the tools that are used within the surgery are now manipulated utilizing a robot. Surgeons control a mechanical arm by utilizing a computer console near the operating table. Dr. Hayetian enjoys utilizing this technique because the robotic system enhances precision, flexibility, and control during the operation, which leads to better results for the patient.

Why St. Clair Health?

Dr. Hayetian emphasizes the significance of patients establishing trust and developing a personal connection with their surgeon. At St. Clair Health, whether the surgery is elective or emergent, your general surgeon remains by your side throughout the entire process, from inception to completion. “We follow our patients all the way through and they are always going to see the same surgeon,” says Dr. Hayetian, “We are following them throughout their medical journey starting from their very first day. That personalized care leads to less uncertainty and anxiety for our patients.”
