James Mullen, M.D.

Orthopedic Surgery

A Pittsburgh native and graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, Dr. Mullen earned his bachelor’s degree with honors at Dartmouth College where he was a member of the Division I football and lacrosse teams. He received his medical degree with honors from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his orthopedic surgical residency at the Hofstra University-Northwell Health System in New York City where he served as administrative Chief Resident. Dr. Mullen also completed a fellowship in hand, arm, shoulder, and microvascular surgery at New York University Medical Center. He has been published in numerous orthopaedic textbooks, medical journals, and has presented research at national conferences.  He’s an assistant clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr.  Mullen has a particular clinical interest in treatment of complex shoulder injuries, arthroscopy, and shoulder replacement surgery. He treats all orthopaedic conditions of the hand, arm, and shoulder, using minimally invasive techniques whenever possible in patients of all ages.  In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, playing sports, and staying up to date with the latest technology. Dr. Mullen is also proficient in Spanish.

Q: What sparked your interest to come work for St. Clair Health?
A: I grew up in Mount Lebanon.  The expansion and growth of St. Clair is exciting and something I wanted to be a part of. 

Q: Who was your role model growing up and encouraged you to follow your dreams?
A: My parents have always had incredibly strong work ethics, which I have looked up to and tried to emulate in my life.

Q: What are your hobbies outside of work?
A: Traveling, outdoor activities, spending time with friends and family.

Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: Pizza; I love to make it as well!
