Looking Back: 2021 in Review

2021 was an exciting year at St. Clair Health. We celebrated successes, opened a brand new, state-of-the-art outpatient center, and reached milestones.

This year we also faced what was certainly one of the most difficult years in modern history for healthcare and healthcare workers. Despite that, our staff has continued to show up every day for our patients. Their dedication to providing expert care has never wavered, and we are extremely grateful for our team of physicians, nurses, and staff.

Join us as we look back at 2021. Without the continued support of our incredible staff and the community we serve, none of this would have been possible.

What’s in a Name?

For nearly 70 years, St. Clair Hospital has cared for residents of communities throughout the South Hills. What began as a small community hospital has since grown into a 329-bed hospital with 600 physicians and more than 2,500 employees across the main hospital campus, physicians’ offices, and outpatient centers in the region. Today St. Clair Hospital no longer encompasses who we’ve become, and this year we welcomed a new era by changing our name to St. Clair Health.

“Thinking back 67 years ago, the founders started a 100-bed hospital, and they never could have imagined where St. Clair would be in 2021,” said James M. Collins, president, and CEO. “Our transition to St. Clair Health exemplifies that evolution and positions our institution and experts as leaders in local healthcare.”

St. Clair Health may now be our name. But our commitment to you remains the same as it has always been: To provide the highest level of care possible.

Groundbreaking Growth Realized

In May, we celebrated the opening of the state-of-the-art Dunlap Family Outpatient Center, located on St. Clair Health’s main campus. This expansion, the largest in four decades, features numerous outpatient services including physical and occupational therapy, diagnostic testing, medical imaging and lab services, 10 surgical suites, 6 endoscopy suites, specialty physician offices for orthopedics, cardiology, urology, and glaucoma and cataracts, and a Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy located on the main floor that is open to the public.

Dunlap Family Outpatient Center is also home to the medical oncology and infusion services of St. Clair Hospital Cancer Center, Affiliated with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, giving patients access to radiation oncology, medical oncology, and surgical oncology all on one campus and in-network for all major insurers.

Since 2006, patient volume at St. Clair has grown by more than 130 percent. The addition of the Dunlap Family Outpatient Center is in direct response to the health needs of those we serve. Without the generous support of our community and benefactors, this would not have been made a reality.

Continued Excellence in Patient Safety and Care

St. Clair Hospital was once again named to the list of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation by Fortune/IBM Watson Health. This marks the fourth consecutive year and seventh overall that St. Clair has won this prestigious honor, the most in western Pennsylvania.

Additionally, St. Clair Health received its 19th consecutive “A” Hospital Safety Rating from the Leapfrog Group, placing us in the top 1.2 percent of hospitals nationwide in patient safety. St. Clair is the only hospital in Pennsylvania to reach this milestone. We’ve also been given a 5-star rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, one of only two such ratings in the region, for exceptional care provided to our patients.

The awards and accolades may come with the name St. Clair engraved on them, but the thousands of employees working tirelessly behind the scenes every day to deliver safe, quality patient care are the real winners.

At St. Clair Health, the South Hills is more than just a community. It’s our home. It’s our patients’ home. Expert care from people who care is a pledge to you to continue providing the highest level of patient-centered care in the region. After all, you’re the reason we do everything that we do. And the next time you visit, or see a St. Clair staff member at the grocery store, give them a smile and say hello.

To our neighbors, our staff, and our patients: Thank you for your support in 2021. Happy New Year!
