Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: St. Clair Health CEO to retire in June

St. Clair Health President and CEO James M. Collins is retiring in June after 16 years leading the Mt. Lebanon hospital and health system.

Mr. Collins will be succeeded on July 1 by Michael J. Flanagan, who is senior vice president and COO. Mr. Flanagan joined the 329-bed St. Clair Hospital in 2006 and became COO in August 2007. Previously, he worked at West Penn Hospital and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Mr. Flanagan has an undergraduate degree in health policy and administration from Penn State University and a graduate degree in public management with a concentration in health systems from Carnegie Mellon University.

Mr. Collins, previously CEO at West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield, replaced Benjamin Snead as CEO of St. Clair in 2006. During his tenure, the hospital outpaced its peers, enjoying robust operating margins and a 33% growth in its service area and a 142% increase in outpatient volumes.

St. Clair’s expansion under Mr. Collins included the 300,000-square-foot Dunlap Family Outpatient Center in 2021 and outpatient centers in Bethel Park and Peters Township. In 2016, St. Clair inked a clinical affiliation with Mayo Clinic, becoming one of 45 members of the May Clinic Care Network worldwide.
