Q: How will I be informed if I am at high risk for developing breast cancer?
A: If you are considered “high risk” (greater than 20%), this score will be included in your mammography report along with additional recommendations to proactively manage your care.
Q: Because I am high risk, does this mean I have or will develop cancer?
A: This does not mean you have cancer or will develop it in your lifetime; these risk factors put you at a higher risk compared to the rest of the population.
Q: If my score indicates that I am at a higher risk for developing breast cancer, what are my next steps?
A: You may be referred for more testing such as a Breast MRI. You may also be referred to our High Risk Breast Clinic. There you will meet with a multidisciplinary team of experts who will navigate you through your journey.
Q:Will my health insurance coverage be affected if I am deemed high risk?
A: Health insurance companies cannot use results to deny coverage or charge higher premiums under the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. The Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Assessment Model is available to all St. Clair Health patients regardless of insurance type and all patients are encouraged to participate.
