St. Clair Hospital Laboratory Services:
Each of the patient service centers is staffed by laboratory professionals and provides comprehensive collection services, including blood work for pre-admission, outpatient surgery testing, or tests ordered by a patient’s physician. Following are the locations of St. Clair Hospital’s Laboratory Services patient service centers. All specimens collected at these sites are returned to the St. Clair Hospital Laboratory several times a day for analysis and testing.

The Laboratory Team
St. Clair Hospital’s Laboratory is staffed by a team of professionals operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide quick and accurate test results.
The lab is equipped with leading-edge technology and analyzers, offering comprehensive testing in the specialties of hematology, chemistry, microbiology, histology, cytology and blood banking.
The lab’s analyzers and information systems interface with the Hospital’s main computer system and results are accurately transmitted to the Hospital’s inpatient units and, in many cases, directly to physician offices in a timely, effective manner.
St. Clair Hospital’s Laboratory is licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and is accredited by The Joint Commission and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) to fulfill all laboratory testing regulations of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The collection, testing and results-reporting of specimens is a team effort of many professionals in the laboratory including:
- Pathologists
Physicians specializing in areas such as laboratory medicine, surgical pathology and cytology. - Phlebotomists
Professionals who are trained to take blood samples and other specimens from patients. - Medical technologists
Clinical laboratory scientists educated and trained to analyze samples to produce accurate and reliable test results. - Cytologists and Histotechnologists
Trained to process surgical and cellular specimens, these professionals assist with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases.
Services Offered by the Lab

Hematology |
The study of the cellular components of the blood, including white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Common tests are the CBC and the H&H. These tests can indicate infection, anemia or leukemia. |
Chemistry |
The study of the serum or plasma of the blood. Common tests include glucose, cholesterol, potassium and creatinine. They can indicate diabetes, renal disease or heart disease. |
Microbiology |
The study of bacteria and viruses in the body. Cultures of blood, urine, throat or wounds are performed to detect infections and determine the best antibiotic course to treat them. |
Blood Bank |
