Preparing for Surgery
It is important to review any information provided to you by your surgeon. Complete your Patient Health Information form and forward to the Pre-Screening Department at St. Clair Hospital as soon as possible. Include an accurate list of any allergies and the name and dosages of all of your medications and supplements. To provide a safe surgical experience, the Hospital needs to review this information prior to your surgery.
If required by your surgeon, schedule and complete an appointment with your family doctor or cardiologist to get medical clearance.
Schedule and complete any testing or bloodwork ordered by your doctor or surgeon.
You may be asked to stop certain medications and/or supplements such as blood thinners and anti-inflammatories. Discuss your medications with you doctor or surgeon and follow their instructions.
Please notify your surgeon of any changes in your health or if you develop an illness such as cough, cold, fever or sore throat.
Prior to Surgery
No shaving, except facial hair.
Bathe and dry with a freshly laundered towel.
Wear laundered clothing and sleep on clean sheets.
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight prior to surgery. This includes water, mints, ice chips and chewing gum. You may brush your teeth and rinse, but do not swallow any water.
Remove all jewelry, including wedding rings and body piercings.
The Day of Surgery
You will be instructed on what medications you should take the morning of surgery. A sip of water is allowed with approved medications.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Do not wear any makeup, including mascara and lipstick. Do not apply deodorant, lotions, fragrances, or powders.
You will be asked to remove contact lenses, dentures, hair pins, hairpieces, tampons and any artificial limbs.
Bring a photo ID and copayment, if applicable. Leave all other valuables at home.
Bring crutches, walker or any equipment as instructed by your surgeon. Patients diagnosed with sleep apnea should bring their CPAP machine and mask.
You must have a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery and remain with you for 24 hours. You will not be permitted to travel by hospital van, taxi or bus unless you have a friend or family member to accompany you. In the event that you do not have a friend or family member available, you must make arrangements for a professional care giver or facility. These arrangements must be made prior to the day of surgery. You can contact your physician or Social Services Department at the Hospital for assistance if needed.
