St. Clair Health Receives CMS Five-Star Rating for Second Consecutive Year

Rating Places St. Clair Health Among Top Hospitals In Region and Nation

PITTSBURGH, PA (July 29, 2022) – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has awarded St. Clair Health a five-star rating as part of its Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings for 2022. This is the second year in a row and fourth time in the last five years that St. Clair has received the highest possible rating.

St. Clair is one of only two hospitals in Western Pennsylvania to receive a five-star rating in the most recent update of the Care Compare website. According to CMS, less than 14 percent of hospitals in the nation received a five-star rating this year. Here is a breakdown by star rating:

  • 198 hospitals received a one-star rating
  • 702 hospitals received a two-star rating
  • 895 hospitals received a three-star rating
  • 895 hospitals received a four-star rating
  • 431 hospitals received a five-star rating

Since 2016, CMS has annually published ratings for more than 3,000 Medicare-certified hospitals on the Care Compare website. CMS uses a one- to five-star scale to rate these hospitals based on their performance across five quality categories: mortality, readmission, safety of care, patient experience, and timely and effective care. These valuable tools help consumers, their families and caregivers easily compare hospitals to make informed decisions about their health care.

“St. Clair is honored to once again be ranked among the highest rated hospitals by CMS. This achievement is a reflection of the persistent hard work and dedication of our 2,500 employees and 600 physicians,” said Diane Puccetti, RN, BSN, MS, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. “Even during the most challenging of times, their commitment to patient safety and satisfaction, along with exceptional clinical outcomes, never wavers.”

This rating adds to St. Clair’s growing list of accolades in recent years and continues a tradition of excellence that is unsurpassed in Western Pennsylvania. St. Clair is the only hospital in Pennsylvania and one of only 33 hospitals nationwide to have earned 20 straight ‘A’ ratings from The Leapfrog Group for hospital safety. Additionally, St. Clair has been ranked among the best hospitals in Pennsylvania by Newsweek and received the 2021 Guardian of Excellence Award® from Press Ganey for patient satisfaction ratings, which places St. Clair among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation.

“Expert care from people who care is not just a phrase to us at St. Clair. It is our pledge to provide world-class, patient-focused care every time,” said Puccetti. “Our team delivers on that pledge through their relentless focus on continuous improvement, which enables St. Clair to grow not to be the biggest, but to be the best healthcare resource for the residents of this region.”
